about
The conference is aimed at reflecting the current state of higher education in the arts in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the wider region in their European and international context. It will specifically focus on:
Defining the key factors influencing the current state of higher education in the arts in Slovakia, the Czech republic and their region as well as internationally;
Reflecting on various models of higher education in the arts, primarily in the fields of visual arts, architecture and design, that could provide lively and viable answers to the identified questions/pressures/needs/problems/situations.
Art schools and universities in our region are currently facing a need for deeper reflection of the priorities, nature and bases of arts education in the wider societal and economic context of our time (shaped, among other things, by the debates about the nature of artistic work as such; the pervading jargon and priorities of the creative industry; the discussions on the societal role and function of universities, etc.). Additionally, they are faced with a need to reflect on the educational models inherited from their past and the various ways these play out at the level of institutions, infrastructures as well as within the organization of and approaches to teaching.
The conference Models of Arts Education: Where From and Towards What? draws on the debates that have been taking place within the region in the past several years and seeks to create a space for thinking about various models for the future development of higher education in the arts. This should be based on a thorough, critical and collective reflection of the current state of affairs and the factors that had formed and continue to form it, undertaken by people working within the field (teachers, students, researchers, graduates and other practitioners).
